85% DEAF PEOPLE AREN'T REGISTERED FOR TZ GENERAL ELECTION 2010

By Joseph Elijah Kitha

More than 85 percent of the deaf are believed to have not registered in the Tanzania permanent register of voters.

The Mbeya Regional Secretary of the Society for the Deaf [CHAVITA], Today Wilson claimed here recently that most of the deaf have not registered because the government has not provided them with enough civic education.

According to Today, the society in Mbeya has 3,000 members who are acceptable by the constitution of Tanzania to vote but only 200 members have registered.
It is reported that members of Mbeya Society for the Deaf who are CCM members have not participated in the just ended opinion polls because of lack of civic education.

Today has asked the Government and National Electoral Commission to involve specialized instructors for the deaf in civic education provision.
She also asked the respective organs to use her Society when giving civic education in order to reach the deaf.

“Government can also use the Foundation for the Civil Society [FCS] to provide civic education, in order to reach the targeted people’’, said Today.
